Expand Microfinance in Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest rates of poverty worldwide and where the need is as great as the potential for microfinance to transform lives. Over the past decade, there has been visible progress toward political stability, strong governance and steady economic growth in several countries. Most of the working poor are engaged in agricultural and rural livelihoods. The low population densities and limited infrastructure in the region have created high operating costs for microfinance institutions. There is significant opportunity to expand access to microfinance in Sub-Saharan Africa through innovative and cost-effective solutions.

Our partners and our programs strive to:

  • Design a range of financial products and services to meet the needs of the poor
  • Utilize technology and other channels to deliver microfinance
  • Adapt effective models across countries in Africa
  • Strengthen leadership and management capacity

Testimony from Pélagie, VSL group member, Rwanda (CARE)

“I am a widow living with one orphan daughter that I adopted. In my life, I did not think that I would be able to start a business. During the first loan disbursement, I did not apply for a loan from my group as I wanted to see what would happen to those who applied for loans and how they used the money. Having seen what others are doing, in the next week I took a loan for 7,200 RWF ($12) which I invested in a pineapple business. By the next week, I had 14,600RWF ($25) – more money than I have ever had in my life. I am now confident to continue with my business and I can see that my future life will be good and I am sure that I will come out of this poor shelter and build an iron sheet roofed house. I see it as a dream and it will be possible”.
