Why We Partnered

Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) is based in Canada and has been creating business solutions to poverty in the developing world for more than 50 years.  MEDA and its partners help over 2.8 million clients annually.

Few microfinance organizations serve youth, particularly those living in rural areas.  MEDA will work with microfinance institutions in Egypt and Morocco to develop and test innovative, targeted products for youth clients. These include the development of savings products for education and loans to start a small business, as well as financial- and business-related trainings to develop youth entrepreneurship skills.

Anticipated impact

  • Improve the quality of life for more than 50,000 youths and their families
  • Connect youth with innovative financial products and services created to meet their needs

Noteworthy

"Youth is a key transition stage in life, when you must determine your way forward and your role in your community. But for young people in Egypt and Morocco, where youth unemployment is rising exponentially, there are few opportunities and they have little hope for the future. With support from The MasterCard Foundation, MEDA is showing youth roads out of poverty through entrepreneurship and helping them create their own future."

Allan Sauder,
President, MEDA
